Theatre, Film and Creative Writing
Only 30 minutes from the heart of downtown Vancouver, the University of British Columbia holds an international reputation for excellence in advanced research and learning.
The spectacular UBC campus is a 'must-see' for any visitor to the city -- where snow-capped mountains meet ocean, and breathtaking vistas greet you around every corner.
Throughout human history, civilizations have created, understood, and explained themselves with written, pictured, and performed stories. From the ancient "tales of the first peoples" to the latest news in medical research we use story, image, and metaphor to explain who we are and influence what we become. We have no better - perhaps no other - process for creating and preserving civilization. The writing on the cave walls and plasma-screen monitors is clear and plain: the arts and studies of Theatre, Film, and Creative Writing are the breath and blood of human civilization.
Our Mission in Film Studies is to educate students in the diversity of World Cinema and in the diversity of cinematic aesthetic practices. We aim to provide a supportive environment in which students can discuss the role that films play in our culture, how they reflect and shape political and social perceptions. Our program views films as aesthetic, cultural, political and social constructs that require context and commentary.
