Department of Theatre, Film & Television Studies
The University of Glasgow was one of the first to establish a theatre department, founded in 1966, and was similarly innovative in 1978 when it began to promote the study of film and television. Both subjects require a blend of theoretical, historical and practical approaches and aim to produce confident and informed graduates with well developed critical and creative skills. In 1997, the Department moved to the University's prestigious Gilmorehill Centre and with a staff of nineteen runs well-resourced programmes in premises which are a model of contemporary design. We offer both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to a total population of around 700 students and our graduates are to be found in all branches of theatre and of the film and television industries as well as in a wide range of employment in the public and private sectors.
The Department's primary purpose is to be a centre of excellence in teaching and research, developing both a critical and a practical understanding of theatre, film and television. We are committed to excellent teaching and work hard to support students as they develop their own interests and experience. We value our professional contacts in theatre, film and television who feed their experience into our courses in various ways. We have a strong emphasis on research but we also encourage students who bring together academic and practical skills and experience into different parts of the programme.
The Department consists of two distinct, but closely related, sections - Theatre Studies and Film & Television Studies - offering separate schemes of study at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
