Communications: Radio and Television
San Diego City College is leading the way on many fronts. Last semester, City College introduced the first two-year Manufacturing Engineering Technology Program (MFET) in the state of California. The MFET program was created with industry leaders to meet the increasing demand for highly skilled technicians in San Diego’s manufacturing industry.
Additionally, City College introduced a new Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program to our long-established Nursing Education Department. Our nursing students are always in high demand by local hospitals and health facilities and most students have secured full-time employment before graduation.
City College is a great place to begin your academic career. With over 1,700 classes offered day, evening, weekend and online, you can earn the credits you need for an Associate degree or Occupational Certificate or to transfer to the four-year college or university of your choice.
City College also offers a wide variety of student support services from financial aid and scholarship opportunities to tutoring and counseling services. We have an active Associated Student Government with many clubs to join, a diverse student body, and a dedicated and tremendously talented faculty and staff who are at the ready to help you achieve your educational goals.
The Radio and Television program encompasses the fields of broadcasting and cablecasting news, radio, television, film, multimedia, and concert productions, along with the expanding area of industrial video applications. The field includes all aspects of creation and production both behind and in front of cameras and microphones on KSDS-FM and the television production facilities through theoretical and practical applications. The Radio and Television Department seeks to prepare the student for transfer to four-year institutions or employment in the field and facilitates training in television production and performance.
Examples of employment options available in entry level radio, television, and film production after successful completion of the associate degree program include: on-air-personality, radio news reporter, radio and television program writer/producer, television operations engineer, news photographer, audio engineer, director and videographer, and studio positions. Careers which require four-year degrees in radio and television include: motion picture writer/ producer, radio and television salesperson, manager, news writer/reporter and news producer. Careers in multimedia and industrial/instructional video require an associate and often a four-year degree.
