Palomar College is a public two-year community college. The Palomar campus is located in San Marcos, California, approximately 30 miles north of San Diego. Palomar enrolls approximately 30,000 full-time and part-time students. Residents of California are charged only $20 per unit. At Palomar, students may choose from over 200 associate degree and certificate programs, complete the first two years of a bachelor's degree, or enjoy personal enrichment classes for lifelong learning.
The Cinema Program provides students with a solid and detailed foundation in the art, technique and business of movies. The variety of offerings are geared to developing a complete overview of the creative and functional aspects of this popular art form.
A new state-of-the-art lecture and screening classroom gives Palomar College students an ideal learning environment for film studies. Production students have the flexibility to shoot with professional film and video equipment and edit using nonlinear systems. Our instructors are active in the field of movies, as authors of film texts, screenplay writers and as filmmakers.
Many of Palomar's best students go on to major film schools, such as USC and UCLA. Some go directly into the movie industry as screenwriters and apprentices on production staffs.
Students learn TV producing, directing, writing, photojournalism, TV News, lighting, film/video editing and working in front and behind the camera.
Advanced TV production classes are taught in the Educational Television Studio, a 3000-square foot facility offering Beta cam SP mastering capabilities and an Avid Composer editing system with digital effects. Students in remote video shooting , editing, and TV news classes practice on Sony and Cannon digital and Beta SP camera's. Students receive training in analog and digital editing systems including Avid, Final Cut Pro,
In the field of TV News we offer two courses RTV 240 TV News and RTV 197 Advanced TV News. RTV 240 is a pre req. for RTV 197. In both classes students learn news ethics, writing, producing, editing, and on-camera technique
RTV 240 TV News students produce three live to tape and one live cablecast half-hour newscasts. The focus is news of the Palomar College. The show is titled Primetime Palomar.Note: RTV 120 is a pre req for this course.
In RTV 197 Advanced TV News students produce eight half-hour TV News programs. The focus is news of north county including more hard news such as police standoffs and crime. The show is titled North County News. Note: RTV 240 is a pre req. for this course.
