They are the makers of the images, words, objects, and sounds that shape and forever alter our world. Prominent among them are the students, faculty and alumni of SAIC.
Our credit/no credit system is actually a structure that enables faculty to push students harder. We place a unique emphasis on creative visual research, which in turn is fundamental to professional practice and most easily nurtured in a multidisciplinary, innovative setting like ours that requires students to take risks and try new things. In our system, faculty can focus on students' creative development: it's about process, not just outcome. The faculty encourage students to investigate, develop, or resolve a creative problem or theme by exploring new approaches or different media.ç
Media — whether film, video, or newer digital technologies — are not simply techniques, but, more broadly, the defining elements of our culture and society. In recognition of this, the Department of Film, Video, and New Media was created from two previously separate departments, film and video. For over three decades, the two departments have remained centers of formal experimentation and critical investigation in film and video. These distinguished histories are the foundations on which the Department of Film, Video, and New Media was built as an interdisciplinary media production and studies program.
