Film Studies Program
Founded in 1787 as a small, private school, the Pittsburgh Academy was located in a log cabin near Pittsburgh’s three rivers. In the 220 years since, the University has evolved into an internationally recognized center of learning and research.
The University of Pittsburgh's Film Studies Program provides both an undergraduate major and Certificate in Film Studies (which includes both critical studies and production courses).
On the graduate level, it is possible to specialize in film studies as part of one's doctoral or master's work in several departments (e.g., English, Slavic languages and literatures, Hispanic languages and literatures), and also to earn doctoral and master's graduate certificates in film studies.
Our program is dedicated to the exploration of cinema and television as both vital contemporary arts and cultural artifacts.
The program offers a stimulating atmosphere in which to study film with numerous lectures (by renowned scholars and artists), colloquia, festivals, and special events taking place on campus. Internship opportunities are also provided and encouraged.
