Alfred University (Communication Studies at College of Liberal Arts and Sciences)
The best preparation for success in this rapidly changing world is a broad-based education. Without question, the liberal arts and sciences expand your horizons: they teach you to think analytically, critically, and creatively, to understand the workings of the natural world, and to express yourself through speech and writing. In addition, they give you the broad knowledge, intellectual depth, and interpersonal skills that will enable you to reach your full potential. At Alfred University, we have a caring and deeply informed faculty made up of talented people who enjoy working closely with students. Our faculty was recently awarded a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honor society. This is a distinction that has been earned by only the top 15 percent of liberal arts and sciences colleges in the country, so our professors are among the best in the nation.
Communication Studies is a broad program that may include journalism, speech, film, television, advertising, public relations, popular music, and new media. The program at Alfred University stresses common principles that tie each to the others. Rather than teach technical skills that inevitably become outdated, we teach fundamental skills - critical thinking, effective writing, dynamic speaking, creative problem solving, and sound teamwork - that allow our graduates to thrive in a rapidly changing media world.
The program provides a solid grounding in the economic structures that shape contemporary media industries, which enables students to predict where the industries are headed in the future.
As a supplement to their classroom work, students are encouraged to work with WALF, the University's FM radio station; AUTV, the on-campus television station; and Fiat Lux, the student newspaper, as well as to complete an off-campus internship with a communications industry organization.
Ultimately, then, at Alfred University we strive to help our students not only find their first jobs, but also to pursue rewarding careers as leaders in the exciting field of Communication Studies.
