Culver City High School's Academy of Visual and Performing Arts
Established in 1996, the Academy of Visual & Performing Arts is on the Westside of Los Angeles in the "Heart of Screenland". The Academy is neighbors with UCLA, USC, Loyola Marymount, Santa Monica College, West Los Angeles College, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Tri-Star and Columbia Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Center Theatre Group, and is surrounded by nurmerous design, recording, and theatre companies. With tremendous community support, a strong faculty, and a rigorous balanced curriculum students receive a well rounded education that prepares them to enter college programs, vocational programs, or the world of work.
The Culver City Academy of Visual & Performing Arts has built a solid reputation in its quality of performance and student achievement since its founding in 1996. We are experiencing our largest year ever, with over 200 students enrolled in over 50 classes and workshops taught by 30 faculty members, and participating in over 25 productions, exhibitions, performances, and special events during the 2006-07 school year.
The Academy offers students an opportunity to engage in an in-depth study of film and video. Located on the Westside of Los Angeles, just a few blocks away from Sony, Tri-Star, and Columbia Pictures, the campus has access to tremendous resources. Degrees are offered to students who complete the requirements in their major. A student may also receive a minor in film. The curriculum combines classroom study with the intense practical experience associated with the Academy’s rigorous production schedule.
The Academy's Film department has teamed up with the Los Angeles Filmmakers Co-Op, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support to student and independent filmmakers in Los Angeles. The center of their organization is a 1985 converted school bus which now acts as a fully functioning production studio.
