Welcome to the Department of Communication at Northern Illinois University.
The department provides students and faculty with a supportive environment in which excellence in learning, scholarship and responsive citizenship are encouraged and rewarded. Our 24 professorial faculty, 15 full-time instructors, 4 supportive professional staff, and graduate assistants serve a diverse student body including approximately 700 undergraduate majors and 83 graduate students.

The department offers two undergraduate degree programs.
Students may earn either the B.A. or B.S. degree in Communication Studies, selecting from one of 3 areas of emphasis, including Communication, Culture and Advocacy, Media Studies, and Organizational/Corporate Communication. The B.A. and B.S. degrees in Journalism are also offered. Graduate course work leading to the M.A. degree in Communication Studies is available in communication theory, journalism, media studies, and rhetorical studies. The Department of Communication also participates in the General Education Program, the Honors Program, the International Studies Program, the Public Administration Program, and the Women's Studies Program at Northern Illinois University.

Department faculty are productive scholars and creative artists who also serve in academic and professional associations as well as press, broadcast media, public relations, civic and corporate organizations. The NIU main campus is located near the western suburbs of Chicago, offering advantages of a nearby cosmopolitan atmosphere in semi-rural setting.
