Belmont University (Department of Media Studies)

The Department of Media Studies is designed to offer quality instruction in programs designed for professional media communicators of the 21st century. We offer majors in the following programs: Audio and Video Production, Mass Communication, Journalism and Public Relations.

In 2004 we opened the 7,000-square-foot Media Studies Center. It houses a multi-media instructional computer lab, the award-winning student newspaper, the Belmont Vision, as well as its online counterpart, belmontvisiononline.com, the campus radio station, The Voice, a broadcast studio, editing suites and a student lounge.

The purpose of the Department of Media Studies is to equip students with the skills necessary to begin careers in a variety of media-related professions, including: Audio and Video Production, Broadcasting, Journalism, Media Management, Online Publishing and Public Relations and Corporate Communications. The faculty will work to prepare professionals who are competent, ethical and progressive in their chosen fields of study.

The primary objective of the Audio-Video Production program is to provide students with the theoretical and technical training necessary to produce program material for both broadcast and non-broadcast. Students will receive a combination of theoretical and practical courses combined with pre-professional training applicable to careers in television, video production and multimedia.

The Mass Communication program is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the electronic media both in theory and in practice. The curriculum prepares students for careers in Mass Communication and/or graduate studies in electronic media and communication. Courses include radio and television programming and station operations.
