University of Chester (Department of Media)

Founded in 1839, the University of Chester is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the country. We are proud of our strong learning tradition, our ability to move with the times, and our energetic student community. Our concern for each individual encourages diverse personalities, qualities and interests to flourish inside and outside the classroom. We value a wide range of approaches to learning, and are dedicated to offering you the best possible experience in training, studying and research for the real world.

Within the 21st century media permeates our very existence. Whether it be print media, radio, TV, cinema, internet or listening to your favourite bands, media proves very hard to live without. We are all consumers of media and absorb it within our daily lives, often without question. But how is it created and why? What are the social and cultural issues that impact upon the media? Should we be critical of the media and challenge the messages it imparts? What is the relationship between production and theory?

The Department of Media seeks to answer these questions through the provision of courses that combine a theoretical study of media with its practice. Our courses are designed to produce thinking practitioners who are able to critically reflect upon the relationship between theory and practice within the modern world. A nine week period of work placement within the media is an integral part of the course and vocationally underpins the academic study.

We have 5 production specialisms:

* Commercial Music Production
* Radio Production
* Multimedia Journalism
* Multimedia Web Production
* Television Production

Each production area boasts facilities second to none and there has been a £300,000 investment in upgrading them over the last twelve months. Students benefit from a very flexible access policy in the use of our facilities outside of teaching hours.
