University of Texas at Austin (Department of Radio-Television-Film)

The Mission of the Department of Radio-Television-Film is to provide quality education in media studies and the creation of media to undergraduate and graduate students, while also creating an environment that supports creative work and scholarly research. A particular goal of all the work of the department is to explore and promote issues of social justice as they relate to communication.

The undergraduate program is one of the most dynamic and highly regarded media programs in the country, and we take great pride in the impressive work done by our current students and alumni.

Current undergraduates have won numerous awards at international, national, and regional film festivals. Many of them also participate in internships with both independent and big-budget film production companies, as well as with radio and television stations. Others have won prestigious fellowships to conduct research in media studies.

In addition to production-oriented work, students study a broad range of media issues, including critical and cultural studies, communication technology and policy analysis, international communication, gender and sexuality issues, ethnic and minority studies, and more.

This combination of production, screenwriting and media studies is one of the strengths of the Department and is a unique characteristic of the undergraduate program. Students graduate with a solid education in skills and theory, technical and historical knowledge, and creative and critical abilities.

The Department of Radio-Television-Film includes both a Studies area and a Production area. Candidates may seek an MA or PhD in our Studies area or an MFA in either Screenwriting or Production.

Our graduates work in all aspects of media production and studies. A few of our most noteworthy alumni are filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids series, Desperado, Sin City), media executives Jordan Levin (WB Television) and Robert Levi (Turner Broadcasting), television director and producer Michael Zinberg, and actor Matthew McConaughey (Edtv, The Wedding Planner, Sahara).
