Deutsche Film und Fernsehakademie Berlin

The dffb is located in the Filmhaus, which is in the Sony Center on Potsdamer Platz, near to the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate. This building is also home to the Film-Museum and Kino Arsenal, with whom the dffb works closely.

There are twelve places on the directing course, six for camera and six for production each year at the dffb. Each new intake of students will follow a course of study of four years in length.

In the first two years of study, all students complete a fixed compulsory programme. Systematically constructed courses introduce all genres and techniques of film-making, providing a thorough knowledge of film history, film aesthetics and film analysis, drama and script, directing, actor and camera guiding, sound, montage, digital technology and production organisation. Practical film and video seminars in which the students adopt changing roles are central to the training.

For students on the directing and camera courses, it is possible after the foundation course to take up to six months sabbatical in order to work as a trainee or an assistant on professional productions or to study as guest student at a film school abroad.

Students of the dffb diversify into their specialisms in their last two years of study. Corresponding to their study category, they work as director, cameraperson or producer and take part in specialised seminars. Individual film and video work takes place in practical seminars, and the realisation of an “individual film” in the third year is compulsory. Studies are completed with the graduation film and a supplementary theory paper.

Production students follow a fixed curriculum during the main part of the course. In seminars, the subjects of production, concept development, budgeting and the media business are taught in line with industry standard. The course lecturers are all professionals from the film and television industry. Breaks are built in to the formal lecture structure in order to allow students to work on their individual films, with the production students working on these films in the role as either producer or line producer.

There is also a further longer break between the 3rd and 4th year for practical work with film or television productions.
