University of Cumbria (Faculty of Arts, Design & Media (Media Production))

What better pedigree can this new university have than the institutions that merged to form it?

The reputation that each of the colleges enjoys translates directly into the University. This is one of these situations where the whole is definitively greater than the sum of its parts; think of the merging colleges as the foundation on which the University of Cumbria has been built—just watch it grow.

Media Production prepares you for a career in the world of radio, television, film and beyond. You gain excellent technical skills, a strong knowledge of relevant media theory and the versatility that today's employers demand. We have superb facilities that rival the best in the UK - an advanced media resource area with nine video editing suites, a television news studio, a fully equipped newsroom, studio galleries for television and radio, a production office, sound studios, an animation suite and training rooms. We provide certification in health and safety and advanced qualifications in camera, sound and editing, recognised by employers. "This highly practical course is designed to give you that crucial edge in the real world that helps launch you on a creative and rewarding career."

This practical course focuses on the real world of broadcast media. You follow current professional practice and learn to operate the same equipment as industry professionals. You can specialise in areas such as documentary, scriptwriting and music video production.
In the first year, you explore a range of media disciplines supported by technical inductions. You collaborate on projects, including popular music (concerts, pop videos), physical theatre (with dance and performing arts students) and documentaries (with journalism and photography students). You acquire practical expertise, learning to research, develop and present proposals and treatments.
In the second year, you develop your skills and study the theory behind current media issues. You choose pathways from scriptwriting, radio and TV news, light entertainment, music videos, documentary, alternative TV/film and radio/TV drama. You undertake a short work placement. There are opportunities to make independent work on your own, resulting in showcase events open to the public and possible employers.
In the final year, you research and produce a major media report on your chosen specialism, and two practical projects in any selected media. You also prepare a professionally researched and presented portfolio of programme ideas that can be used in the workplace at the start of your career.
