Southampton Institute (Faculty of Media, Arts and Society)

We are one of the three faculties within Southampton Solent University and are proud to offer such an interesting portfolio of courses ranging from Animation to Advertising, from Comedy to Criminology, from Film to Fine Art, and from Popular Music to Psychology.

The courses within the School of Media are taught by academics and practitioners primarily from the spheres of film, television, popular music, radio, cultural studies, Paul Marchbankphotography, screenwriting, journalism and performance. All production staff are highly experienced media industry professionals who bring with them real life experience and skills. We currently have an enviable portfolio of successful filmmakers, music producers, TV producers, editors, directors and screenwriters.

From both an educational and a professional standpoint, the experience of our students is greatly enhanced by the School's close links with the creative industries, particularly in areas such as Television, Popular Music, Radio and Film Production. As one of the country's first ITV Centres of Excellence students can acquire enhanced knowledge and skills through an involvement with this project. Similarly our well resourced facilities play a pivotal role in supporting curriculum delivery and student production on a number of our courses. Students also have the opportunity to develop their creative and professional potential through a variety of other outlets. We have a student-run record label called First Degree Records. The Film Society holds regular screenings at Southampton's Harbour Lights cinema and in the University's own 35mm film projection and multi-track sound facility.
