Orange County High School of the Arts (Film and Television Conservatory)

As one of the premier arts schools in the nation, the Orange County High School of the Arts embraces and encourages artistic creativity and academic excellence. This innovative public charter school provides a uniquely challenging and nurturing environment focused on individual growth, opportunity, and diversity. The U.S. Department of Education and the National Endowment for the Arts have recognized the Orange County High School of the Arts as a model arts education program. The school is also accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Now celebrating its 20th year, the Orange County High School of the Arts is the place for aspiring young artists to refine their skills and flourish in one of 11 arts conservatories offered, including Ballet Folklorico, Classical & Contemporary Dance, Commercial Dance, Creative Writing, Film & Television, Instrumental Music, Integrated Arts, Music & Theatre, Opera, Production & Design, or Visual Arts.

The Film and Television Conservatory is open to students in grades 9-12. Courses offer practical experience in the preparation and making of fine films including courses in scriptwriting, production, live production, editing, screen writing, film history, directing, documentary, location filming, and cinematography using 8mm film. Special sessions with industry professionals and field trips to outside venues have enhanced the learning curve. Opportunities for students to film in the community are made available through the conservatory director, and community outreach programs.

Some professionals who have enriched our students' filmmaking experience include:
John Cazin
Barry Kemp
J.T.S. Moore
James Ward Byrrkit
Del Reisman
Daniel Petrie
Mike Kelly
T.S. Cook

Film &Television offers courses in script writing, beginning and advanced video and film production (featuring short narrative films, documentaries and productions), post production, audio design, non-linear-editing, cinematography, film studies and theory, television broadcasting and production. The Film and Television Conservatory produces a daily television series, Art Attack, which broadcasts daily announcements to the entire school, live. The department also produces a bi-annual film festival open to family, staff and the public. They are also fortunate to have access to the actors, actresses, dancers, musicians, and filmmakers offered by the nine other conservatories, as well as being able to take elective classes in photography, costuming, makeup and set design—all important parts of making the perfectly artistic film.
