Art Center College of Design (Film Department)

Art Center College of Design has been a leader in art and design education for nearly 75 years. The College offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide range of disciplines, as well as Public Programs offering design education to all ages and levels of experience. Fundamental to Art Center's core curricula is a commitment to social and cultural engagement and giving students the tools and skills with which to effect change and address real-world issues. Art Center is located in Pasadena, California, with classes held at its Hillside Campus and new South Campus in downtown Pasadena.

Our philosophy of complete creative freedom gives students the opportunity to write and direct their own work, encourages them to push the boundaries of traditional filmmaking, and fosters experimentation with new concepts in form, content, structure and style. The complexities and financial risks inherent to quality film production often separate author from director, diminishing the creativity of the artist. Our curriculum is designed to eliminate this barrier by giving our students the freedom to direct their own work. Students are encouraged to push the boundaries of traditional filmmaking by experimenting with form, content, style and structure. Our focus on developing leadership skills encourages students to work with a team, combining their personal talents with creative contributions from other students and faculty in script writing, directing, cinematography, editing and production design. Our graduates have the creativity to author their own works, and the production skills to bring their ideas to life through filmmaking.
