University of Colorado at Boulder (Film Studies Program University of Colorado at Boulder)

Founded in 1972, the Film Studies Program of the University of Colorado at Boulder is nationally recognized for its diverse and innovative course offerings. It is especially known for its many areas of specialization, including narrative, documentary, experimental, and animation film. It is also known for its commitment to interdisciplinary teaching with a special emphasis on film and the visual arts.

Since 1989, the program has been offering degrees in filmmaking (BFA) and critical studies (BA). The Film Studies BA focuses on the study of the nuances of film as an art form and the BFA is focused on the art of independent filmmaking. Film Studies offers an interdisciplinary MFA degree with the Department of Art and Art History. Film also hopes to create a critical studies MA track within the next few years.

The program has a distinguished faculty with a national as well as an international reputation. The late Stan Brakhage taught for over twenty years and his legacy remains central to the vision of Film Studies.

The program has a large collection of 16mm film prints for classroom use as well as cameras, film and digital video editing equipment, and optical printers which are available to students from the Kage (the Film Studies equipment rental desk).

The program is a member of The University Film and Video Association and The Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers.
