University of Manitoba (Film Studies Program)

n conjunction with a full repertoire of academic film course listings, the University of Manitoba also offers a variety of practical courses that complement our diverse and growing Film Studies Program.

As we attempt to increase the number of course offerings with greater technical support, the Film Studies Program continues to develop as a flexible career-oriented field of study, offering not only academic excellence and creative mentorship, but also exposure to the technical side of film production. Our program is designed to produce broadly-capable Film Studies graduates.

The University of Manitoba Film Studies program is progressive- thinking. We are continually working to expand our resources and to design new course offerings. Cinematography, Editing, and sound recording are among the proposed topics for future courses.

Practical experience prepares a film student for a possible career as a filmmaker. We create opportunities for students to complete short films which will be eligible for submission to film festivals. As students acquire requisite skills, they become eligible for relevant equipment loans for their school-related or non-profit projects.

Non-linear editing equipment is now the standard for editing in the film and television industries. Film and video post-production is completed in the English Media Lab, on our seven Apple G5 stations.

The lab is supplied with:

Final Cut Pro 5 Studio, Adobe Creative Suite, Final Draft Studio, ProTools, and Maya. For more information regarding the English Media Lab, please contact the Lab Administrator, David Smith: david_smith@umanitoba.ca

Technical assistance is available in the lab for ongoing tutorials in the development of your skills. The media lab offers a supportive work environment that presents a professional workflow, technical support, and creative guidance.
