ECAL / University Of Art And Design (Film Studies)

Founded in 1821, the ECAL (formerly the Cantonal School of Drawing, and later the School of Fine and Applied Arts) is affiliated to the Department of Education and Youth (DFJ) of the Canton of Vaud through the General Direction of Higher Education (DGES).

Following HES (Haute Ecole Spécialisée = University of Applied Sciences) recognition of its Visual communication and Industrial and product design courses in 1998 and its Fine arts course in 2005, the ECAL is a Haute Ecole d'Art et de Design / University of Art and Design and a member of University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland

The film studies course prepares students for the profession of director in a wide-ranging audiovisual context. The training takes into account the multiple fields of application associated with work in this field: creative film and video, the documentary, the fiction film, the information film, the television programme, video clips and advertising. At the end of their studies, students must be able to implement different means of expression combining sound and image and successfully complete projects in all fields of audiovisual production.

Film studies has links with Swiss and foreign professional circles. Each year the course welcomes a number of guest speakers and professors (film-makers, technicians, scriptwriters, film historians, producers, etc) who share their experience and creativity with students during seminars and workshops. From the first year through to diploma work, the film studies course offers a wide range of workshops to students, resulting in a large number of individual productions.
