California College of Arts & Crafts

Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts (CCA) is the largest regionally accredited, independent school of art and design in the western United States.

Our students work in film, video, digital media, installation, sound art, performance, kinetic sculpture, collaborative networks, and the human/machine interface. The program builds upon the college's interdisciplinary tradition and emphasis on aesthetic and conceptual innovation and experimentation.

Our Bay Area setting provides access to one of the world's most varied media art scenes, with major film festivals, a burgeoning alternative media scene, nationally recognized production facilities, and proximity to Silicon Valley.

Film/Video. The program's focus is on independent film and video making and experimental practice. Our students learn a full range of conceptual and practical skills to explore the boundaries of various genres, including fiction, installation, documentary, narrative, and abstraction. The curriculum combines history, concept, and production skills, including directing, performance, collaboration, spatial exploration, cinematography, lighting, editing, sound design, and improvisation. The program culminates in a senior project presented in a public venue.

Art and Technology. This joint curriculum with the Sculpture Program is designed for students who are interested in the convergence of art, technology, and interactive media. The course of study maximizes the strengths of each program by combining their rich histories and conceptual frameworks. Students experiment with emerging, current, and historical technologies to create hybrid projects through programming, building electronic circuits, and designing and fabricating kinetic structures.

The program offers a wide range of technological resources. Media arts students work closely with faculty to develop a rigorous course of study through an interdisciplinary curriculum. Through internships and community collaborations, our students broaden their art practice and acquire experience useful in defining a career. The program prepares artists to engage dynamically and critically in contemporary art and media culture. Graduates are prepared to pursue an advanced degree and/or apply their education as practicing media artists in the media industry and the art world.
