Arizona State University (Herberger College of the Arts, School of Theatre and Film)

When the College of Fine Arts was founded in 1965, the Department of Speech and Drama moved to the new college as one of three units. In 1977, the Arizona State Board of Regents approved the formation of a separate Department of Theatre. Film courses had been taught within the Department of Theatre since the 1980s. In 2005, The Board of Regents authorized the creation of an expanded School of Theatre and Film within the Herberger College of the Arts. Undergraduate and graduate students can choose from several degree programs.

The School of Theatre and Film, formerly the Department of Theatre, links the study of theatre and live performance with the study of filmmaking in unique ways. On this website you will find information about our comprehensive B.A. liberal arts degrees in Theatre, including optional concentrations in acting or design & production, the B.A. degree in Film with concentration in film and media production, our Ph.D. programs in Theatre for Youth and Theatre and Performance of the Americas, and our M.F.A. degrees in theatre practice with their emphasis on new work and community engagement.

At the center of our philosophy are the four "C's": creativity, community, collaboration and collegiality. We build on these core values in our classrooms and studios, research endeavors, public programming and engagement with outside constituencies.

With a distinguished roster of faculty and frequent guest artist residencies, the School of Theatre and Film is dedicated to moving the arts of theatre and film into the future.

Today, 31 faculty and 9 staff oversee more than 200 Theatre majors. The department is housed in Dixie Gammage Hall. MainStage Theatre productions, as well as those staged by Student Production Board’s Prism Theatre Company, include the Paul V. Galvin Playhouse, the Lyceum Theatre, the Prism Theatre, the Barbara Salisbury Wills Child Drama Studio and the Directing Studio.
