University of Toronto (Innis College (Cinema Studies Program))
Treating film as a unique and powerful art with its own traditions, history, conventions and techniques, Cinema Studies is classified among the Humanities disciplines in the Faculty of Arts and Science. The program provides its students with a wide choice of courses in film analysis, film history and film theory, covering such topics as film genre, documentary film, representation of race and gender, and national cinemas.
Innis College provides a small-scale, informal home to about 1,650 undergraduate students, 400 of whom are first-year students.
Innis prides itself on its high academic standards, vibrant community and supportive counselling and academic services. The college building blends old and new styles by incorporating a substantial Victorian home into a functional modern structure. It contains a forum-style auditorium and cinema, a library, a café with an outdoor patio, a rooftop garden, and student study and lounge spaces.
Cinema Studies focuses on methods of research and scholarly discourse particular to film study and develops students' abilities to understand film within a variety of contexts: critical, economic, cultural, technological, and aesthetic. Over 25 instructors from various Departments and Colleges within the Faculty of Arts and Science participate in the teaching of Cinema Studies.
