University of Wales College (International Film School Wales)

The International Film School Wales (IFSW) is the leading institution for the promotion and development of the film, new media and performance culture of Wales through higher-level education, research and training. Students at IFSW benefit from being located in a thriving production region of the UK and from the School's excellent links with industry.

Our work includes film drama, documentary, animation, performance, screenwriting and computer games. We draw on a wide pool of creative and innovative educators and practitioners from Wales and beyond. Visiting professor and Oscar nominated director Ken Russell works regularly with our students, and recent visitors include Mike Leigh, Kevin MacDonald and Bill Plimpton.

Notable filmmakers who have graduated from IFSW include the award winning film maker Justin Kerrigan, director of ‘Human Traffic'. Film graduate Asif Kapadia scooped two BAFTA awards for his first feature film “The Warrior”. Other students and graduates have received nominations and awards for their film and animation work at a variety of UK and international film festivals including the Cannes Film Festival, Ffresh Festival of the Moving Image Wales, the Royal Television Society, and the Celtic Film & TV Festival.

Skillset Screen Academy Wales :IFSW is a lead partner of the Skillset Screen Academy Wales and has been approved by the UK film industry as a centre of excellence for film education and training. Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for the audiovisual industries, and the voice of industry on skills issues, has awarded Screen Academy status to only six HE/FE consortia across the UK . This provides funding for Masterclasses, Mentors, bursaries, industry placements, production costs and festival attendance. The SSAW receives strong support from the Welsh film and TV industries, through the Industry Liaison Panel, unique in the UK .

Our BA (Hons) Animation has recently been awarded Skillset Course Accreditation, one of only six courses in the UK to receive this recognition.
