Minnesota Community & Technical College (MCTC's Filmmaking Program)

At Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) we can help you make your dreams a reality.

Our mission is to provide high quality, lifelong learning programs. We offer a spectrum of academic programs, including certificates, diplomas and associate degrees. Many of our programs transfer to four-year colleges, while others prepare you for the world of work.

Because if you don't chase your dreams, who will?

MCTC's Filmmaking Program will train you in the art and craft of filmmaking using a combination of aesthetic, technical and theoretical approaches. The program is rigorously hands-on, so you will use a camera almost from the first day. By creating personal and group productions, you will develop solid skills in directing, camera operation, lighting, editing, preproduction, screenwriting, and field sound recording. Experienced faculty--all professional filmmakers--will help you understand and develop the skills involved in many of the craft/technical positions in the filmmaking industry. The program includes a broad spectrum of classes in production, history of film, sound and screenwriting.

The MCTC Filmmaking program is the most affordable media arts education in Minnesota and has an excellent reputation with local production facilities that offer several opportunities for quality internships. The program's urban setting will give you unique access to job placement opportunities in the Twin Cities area, one of the largest commercial and industrial markets in the country. The program is physically demanding, since the process of transporting and setting up large equipment requires a substantial amount of heavy lifting. You will need good stamina to make it through lengthy shooting days. MCTC has an articulation agreement with Metropolitan State University.

Filmmaking grad is off to good start, Adam Forsgren, who graduated from MCTC in spring 2006 with an associate of science degree in filmmaking, was hired last fall by the Minnesota County Attorneys Association to film a documentary titled Revealing Meth in Minnesota. The 55-minute film will be used to educate schools, community groups, parents and others about the perils of methamphetamine.
