Southern Methodist University (Meadows School of the Arts (Division of Cinema-Television) )

The Division of Cinema-Television combines technical instruction and creative practice — all within the broader context of the intellectual, aesthetic, and social functions of TV and film. Students take basic courses in audio and video production, 16mm film production, screenwriting, editing, lighting, and other technical skills which lead to more focused classes in those areas. At the same time, a series of courses in film/television history, theory and aesthetics provide an intellectual foundation that enhances creative work and contributes to a liberal arts education.

In its creative practice, research methods and potential to reach millions of viewers, Cinema-Television is a unique discipline that blends elements of traditional visual and performing arts with modern communication arts. The coursework incorporates digital cinematography, non-linear editing, and visual effects into traditional film and TV production methods. In addition, the program teaches contemporary industry business and economic practices. Our legacy is strong—with graduates working throughout the industry across the United States.

For students wishing to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Cinema- Television, admission is a two-part process. Students are admitted first by the University, and later into the Division of Cinema-Television. To be accepted, students must have completed 24 semester hours of college-level work in Dedman College which administers the general education requirements at SMU or the transfer equivalent. In addition, students must meet GPA requirements established by the Division of Cinema-Television.
