Columbia University (School of the Arts)

From its beginnings in a schoolhouse in lower Manhattan, Columbia University has grown to encompass two principal campuses: the historic, neoclassical campus in the Morningside Heights neighborhood and the modern Medical Center further uptown, in Washington Heights. Today, Columbia is one of the top academic and research institutions in the world, conducting pathbreaking research in medicine, science, the arts, and the humanities. It includes three undergraduate schools, thirteen graduate and professional schools, and a school of continuing education.

A world-renowned film school, the Film Division at Columbia University's School of the Arts in New York City offers Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees with concentrations in screenwriting, directing, and producing.

The Film Division at Columbia offers a uniquely integrated curriculum centered around film as a storytelling medium, an emphasis reflected to varying degrees in every course offered. The course of instruction combines directing, writing, and producing with technical training and history/theory to provide students with a deep understanding of the principles and practice of dramatic narrative. In the first year, all students take a required, integrated program of workshops and lectures before selecting a specialized concentration in screenwriting, directing, or producing. In our teaching, we make the heritage of dramatic narrative a living, vital part of the student's experience--not as abstract concept, but as practical knowledge. We treat films not only as technology or business, but as works of collaborative imagination. Our faculty combines veteran and new members of the New York and Hollywood film communities. Our student work wins awards and recognition for its energy, honesty, clarity, and vision. Our alumni produce, write, and direct films that help to set the standard for independent cinema.
