Napier University (Screen Academy Scotland)

The first two years of Screen Academy Scotland have flown by with over 120 post-graduate students passing through the doors at Napier University or Edinburgh College of Art since 2005. Two new courses - the MA Screenwriting and the MFA Advanced Film Practice at Napier have been added to the portfolio of screen programmes across the two institutions and students are now enjoying state of the art facilities at the new production centre, opened by Tilda Swinton last August.

The ethos of Screen Academy Scotland can be summed up in one word - collaboration. Collaboration between Napier and eca, between staff and students, amongst the students themselves and, crucially, between the Academy and the wider screen industry, especially our key funders Skillset, Scottish Screen and the Scottish Executive.

The first crop of films from the new Advanced Film Practice programme demonstrates this eloquently. One of the films, River Child was written by a graduate of the MA Screenwriting (Lin Anderson from Scotland), produced by an MA Screen Project Development student (Mattias Karlsson from Sweden) and directed by an MFA student (Damian Woods from England). Crewed by a mix of professionals and recent film graduates and part funded by the Academy and the South West Screen Commission, where it was shot, it sets an example for others to follow.

As the Academy approaches its second birthday we are looking at the next phase of development - priority areas to add to our existing focus on writers, producers and directors; internationalising the student experience; deepening our links with the local industry and with other Higher/Further Education institutions. Short Course and other Continuing Professional Development opportunities for freelancers and professionals at all stages of their careers will be a particular focus of 'phase two' and we look forward to an ever expanding list of collaborations.
