The University of Illinois - Chicago (UIC Department of Electronic Media, Film, Photography)

Electronic Visualization, formally defined as "the transformation of the symbolic into the geometric" has emerged as a major computer-based field. The Electronic Media curriculum introduces these rapidly developing media and their basic processes. The program teaches students to become effective programmers using computer technology to create new visual statements and electronic forms of communication. The program encourages the integration of visual esthetics with technologies. Electronic tools are used as a vehicle for personal, audio, and visual imagery with applications across a wide range of professional career opportunities including industrial, scientific, manufacturing and broad-based visualization research and development.

The Film/Animation program includes production courses, colloquia and independent study. Experimental, creative expression and documentary approaches are stressed in the filmmaking production courses. Animation is considered in the broadest sense of single-frame motion design and synthesis and many approaches and techniques are explored. Students are encouraged to cross the traditional boundaries between recorded motion and animated motion and inclusively employ both. Individual projects are emphasized.

The Video program encourages using electronic media as a creative tool for personal expression. Students are introduced to non-traditional formal approaches which offer an alternative to television. The program recognizes that video is used in a variety of art practices, including installation, performance, experimental narrative and documentary. In addition to single-channel video art works, interdisciplinary projects are supported and encouraged. Screenings of work by nationally and internationally recognized artists introduce students to a wide variety of formal and conceptual concerns. Basic production and editing skills are emphasized, while the advanced students can deepen their experience through directed-study.
