University of North Texas (UNT Department of Radio, Television and Film)

The RTVF Department offers the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Science, and the Master of Fine Arts Degrees in radio, television and film. The RTVF Department has been named one of the top programs in broadcast education by author Leonard Mogel in the book This Business of Television. In addition to this national recognition, the RTVF Department is one of the leading programs in the State of Texas and across the Southwest Region. An outstanding faculty, a great learning facility, and co-curricular activities via KNTU-FM and North Texas Television (NTTV) and the new Center for Spanish Language Media provide a wonderful setting for study and learning.

Our undergraduate degree program encompasses both creative skills-based training along with theoretical knowledge covering history, criticism, management, economics and policy, all built upon a strong liberal arts foundation, as well as several certificate programs. This educational experience prepares students for many different career opportunities in and around the electronic media and film industries, as well as preparation for advanced study.

In addition to our long-standing MA/MS program in industry studies and film history/criticism, we now offer an MFA degree in documentary production and studies. This degree is appropriate for applicants who have been out of school for a time and want to upgrade their skills and/or prepare for a teaching career at the university level. It is also appropriate for applicants who desire to work in the non-fiction production industry. For information on admission requirements click graduate studies or contact Ben Levin at levin@unt.edu; 940-565-4578.

Our facilities are located on the main campus of the University of North Texas in Denton, approximately forty minutes north of downtown Dallas-Fort Worth, the nation's seventh largest media market. During their senior year, many students work as interns in area media organizations. Teaching facilities operated and maintained by the department include two fully equipped television studios, several audio production and editing rooms, and video and film editing labs. Students also use the facilities of KNTU, our 100,000 watt FM station and NTTV, our cable television outlet. Well-equipped campus computer labs also contain specialized hardware and software for audio and video editing. A considerable amount of audio, video, and film equipment is available for check-out to enable students to complete projects outside of class. An extensive collection of television programs and theatrical films are available for student viewing at the University's Chilton Media Library.
