Fairleigh Dickinson University (Visual & Performing Arts Department)

Unique among institutions of higher education is The Visual & Performing Arts Department of Becton College, located on the Madison Campus at the College of Florham. Here we merge all the arts into one department, encompassing studio arts, computer graphics, animation, film and theater. Why? Because we believe that they all strive to convey feeling, emotion, atmosphere and a human connection with their audience. We believe that students in all these visual and performing arts can learn from and support one another. We also believe that these are arts that require both craftsmanship and creative thinking. Therefore the more experience and exposure to the other related arts, the better artists and craftsmen our students will become. For only once one masters the craft, can one grow into the artist.

To make it in today’s film industry, students must learn more than the technical. We teach the art of filmmaking – along with the how.

Our intimate department, which offers the only Film Degree program at FDU, features a low student to faculty ratio that fosters mentorship and allows students to begin shooting films and animating beginning in their freshman year. We believe in hands-on education, getting students immediately involved in production, working with the latest in digital film and computer animation technology while still learning from the standards in film production.

Students have the opportunity to get real world experience by taking industry internships and working in our Corporate Video Production class which has used student crews to produce professional videos for a variety of clients. Through our new Feature Filmmaking class, students work along side professionals on an independent feature film.

In our Film program students shoot assignments on a variety of formats, from professional 24p digital cameras, to Betacams, and the Arriflex 16mm camera. Students learn non-linear postproduction working in our Final Cut and Avid editing rooms. Courses in screenwriting, directing, lighting and cinematography complement our production and post-production courses. Our proximity to New York City provides students with many opportunities for internships in the industry. The program culminates in a senior project which premieres at a local movie theater. Student projects utilize our idyllic campus, which has been used by the feature films A Beautiful Mind and Family Stone as prime locations.
